Mrs Jane Povey nee Cooper 1827 - 1910

Jane Cooper was born on 7th July 1827 in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. Her parents were Thomas and Mary Cooper.

She was baptised on 27 Dec 1829.

The 1841 census records her as living with her older sister, Martha in Workhouse Lane, Chatteris.

She married Richard Povey on 19th July 1847 at St Paul's Canonbury in the Parish of Islington.

By the time that their first child Edwin was born in January 1849,  the Jane and Richard were living in Brighton. The reason they moved to Brighton could have been that Richard's cousin, William have been living in the town since the mid 1840's.

Their second child, a daughter, Emma was born in July 1850 and a second son Richard in 1854.

The 1851 Census shows the family living in a shared house at 15, Boss's Gardens in Brighton. Jane was a dressmaker and Richard a dairyman.

Tragedy seems to have been part of Jane's early life as she lost her husband in December 1853. It is likely that her mother had died before 1850 as her father, Thomas married Mary Mould, nee Dawes in October of that year.

How the Povey family survived after Richard died and the birth of her third child, also Richard is not known, but  the young family did survive is evident.  The 1854 Taylors Directory for Brighton records a William Povey trading as a greengrocer at 14, George Street; was he related? There is a William Povey, Jane's uncle by marriage who was born in Chieveley in 1781. Might he have gone to Brighton to rescue the family? It seems more likely that cousin William who was working as a servant may have been Jane's immediate saviour.

She married for a second time in 1859 to Richard's brother, Matthew.

The 1861 census records them living at 51, George Street in Brighton. The ground floor of the premises was used as their greengrocers shop. She and her husband Matthew lived at this address for the rest of their lives.

In April 1871 her elder son, Edwin died, he was 22 years old. There was further tragedy in October 1872 when their youngest child, Richard past away, he was 18 years old.

Her daughter and only surviving child, Emma married John Goodridge on 25th December 1885.

By 1891 Matthew had ceased being a greengrocer. With no children living with them Jane was taking in boarders. The 1891 census records the names of three boarders.

In 1901 they are living on their own, both aged 72. Matthew is recorded as a furniture sale porter.

The post card collection reveals a relationship with their niece Elizabeth Povey including visits, There were also the thank you cards from Henry Mould, who was probably Jane's step brother.

Jane Povey died on 11th February 1910. She was buried on 15th February 1910 at  Bear Road Cemetery in Brighton- grave R17, 16

After Mrs Povey died masons, S. Anscombe were engaged to provide a 6 feet high stone with marble kerbing to surround the grave. The stone to be inscribed in memory of Jane, Edwin and Richard Povey. The total cost was £21 5s 0d.

She was John Povey Goodridge's maternal grandmother.
